LOCTITE® SI 598

Pre-Cut Gaskets also referred to as solid or compression gaskets are typically made of rubber, cork, metal or paper. They require the exact size and shape gasket for each seal, resulting in complex inventory management. Once assembled, the pre-cut gaskets can relax, shrink or become embrittled over time, creating leak paths and potential system failure or plant downtime. Liquid gaskets on the other hand are form-in-place gaskets and can be easily dispensed onto a infinite range of flange patterns, reducing inventory costs. Once cured, they remain leak-free over a long period of time, even when exposed to harsh chemicals and high operating temperatures and pressures. They provide a seal that won’t shrink, compress, crack or relax, eliminating the risk of potential leak paths or having to retighten over time.

Firstly, RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanization and refers to the curing process seen in silicone adhesives known as vulcanization, which is the change from a liquid to an elastic body. During the vulcanization (when crosslinking starts due to contact with atmospheric moisture), a by-product is released (referred to as condensation). The 1-part condensation cure silicone system is an ideal solution for numerous sealing, bonding and coating applications. Flowable, low viscosity products are suitable for potting and coating applications, whilst medium to high viscose products are suitable for sealing and bonding parts without adhesive run-off.

The operating temperature range for standard Loctite anaerobic threadlockers / thread sealants / gasketing adhesives is -55°C to +150°C. High-performance anaerobic grades, or alternative technologies such as silicones, can offer significantly improved temperature resistance depending on the specific application requirements. All adhesives are compatible with metal substrates although bond strength and durability will vary depending on the technology selected. Anaerobic adhesives may cause stress-cracking in some sensitive polymers and therefore should generally be avoided on plastic parts. Consult Henkel technical teams for further advice as needed.

For flange sealing applications, anaerobic adhesives are preferable when high strength is required (usually for rigid machined parts rather than pressed/flexible flanges); when high chemical/solvent resistance is required; and on metal components where there is limited moisture or exposure to the environment. Silicones are recommended where there are large gaps, open/exposed bond areas, or when high flexibility or extremely high temperature resistance (generally in excess of 150°C) is required.

Both silicones and SMP adhesives provide excellent flexibility and gap-filling properties together with high adhesion to a wide range of substrates, making them ideal for elastic bonding & sealing applications. Silicones have superior thermal resistance for high-temperature applications, whereas SMP adhesives are suitable for applications that require over-painting. LOCTITE® silicone adhesives can be used for such applications. High temperature resistance is a necessity and materials like LOCTITE® SI 5920 or LOCTITE® SI 5990 can be considered.
