The powertrain of a car covers all the components that generate power and transfer it to the road. That includes the engine, the transmission, differentials, and the driveshaft. In hybrid and electric vehicles, the propulsion system also includes the batteryelectric drive system, and power conversion systems

Different engine components need to be securely connected and sealed to ensure the efficient operation of the vehicle and prevent leaks. Amongst its wide range of products for automotive powertrains, Henkel provides solutions for gasketing and sealing of engine components, transmission housings, and oil pans. We also offer a service for porosity sealing of casted powertrain parts, such as engine blocks or transmission housings.

Additionally, we provide solutions for all stages of powertrain manufacture from forgingand machining to assembly, including lubricants for forming and machining, cleaning products, liquid sealants, and adhesives.

Powertrain Material Solutions

Automotive manufacturers face many challenging demands when it comes to internal combustion engine materials, and Henkel offers high performance powertrain sealing solutions to meet these demands.

Our extensive Powertrain solutions include vacuum impregnation service for porosity sealing of engine blocks, transmission housings, and battery pack housings. The application of porosity sealing is required for cast parts made of aluminium, cast iron, or brass alloys, where it is used to fill voids and holes. Microporosity in parts made of cast metals and non-leakproof areas in electrical components may cause pressure leaks, inferior surface quality, corrosion, and high reject rates.

Henkel offers a broad range of LOCTITE® form-in-place and cure-in-place gaskets as automotive engine and transmission sealants that provide liquid and gas-tight seals around joints and flanges. Our Powertrain material solutions also include liquid and pre-applied threadlockers as well as retaining and core plug sealants designed to provide secure bonding and sealing of powertrain components, offering leak-proof and highly reliable results. Resistant to automotive fluids and high temperatures, our threadlocking, retaining, core plug and automotive gasketing solutions reduce costs by improving assembly efficiency.

Powertrain Applications

Henkel’s automotive powertrain solutions can be used in a variety of applications, including

  • Engine component sealing
  • Transmission housing sealing
  • Water pump and oil pump sealing
  • Sealing of oil pans
  • Porosity sealing of engine blocks and transmission housings
  • Threadlocking and sealing of fasteners and threaded components
  • Cup plug sealing and retention of cylindrical assemblies

Engine System Sealing and Gasketing

Reliable gasketing solutions are necessary when it comes to automotive powertrain systems. Preventing leaks is vital to avoid performance issues and even catastrophic damage. Henkel offers high-quality form-in-place and cure-in-place gasketing solutions that work reliably even under the harshest conditions.

Henkel’s automotive engine sealants help to ensure high dependability and prevent fluid leaks. This includes anaerobic, polyacrylate- and silicone-based FIPG and CIPG that are developed specially for automotive applications. Our automotive engine sealants are designed to withstand high temperatures and aggressive media, making them reliable solutions to prevent fluid leaks. Henkel’s range of LOCTITE® gaskets create strong but flexible bonds and are resistant to engine fluids. Formulations include room temperature vulcanizing silicones and innovative polyacrylates that can be formed-in-place or cured-in-place depending on your requirements.

Porous engine block sealants protect casting components against porosity defects, which can happen when fluids or gases permeate through small holes or cracks.

Transmission House Sealing

Transmission sealants are used to prevent leaking of transmission fluids. Henkel’s range of LOCTITE® transmission case sealant solutions are available as anaerobic, room temperature vulcanizing silicone and polyacrylate gasketing formulations. They are designed for excellent resistance against aggressive media like ATF and offer high temperature resistance.

Water Pump and Oil Pump Sealing

Henkel’s sealing products that are resistant to engine oil, ATF or water-glycol-mixtures even under harsh conditions provide a reliable and long-lasting seal for water pumps and oil pumps. Henkel’s FIPGs and CIPGs for pumps offer fast curing, excellent adhesion to both metal and plastic surfaces and excellent media resistance.

Threadlocking and Sealing Fasteners and Threaded Components

Henkel offers a range of threadlocker and pre-applied sealants designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners, which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools. These sealants cure due to the absence of air when confined between close fitting metal surfaces. Our threadlockers and thread sealants prevent loosening and leakage from shock and vibration.

Cup Plug Sealing and Sealing and Retention of Cylindrical Assemblies

Henkel core plug solutions are designed for cup plug sealing, but are also applicable to many other high-strength sealing applications where non-migration is desired. Our retention products are also designed for the bonding of cylindrical fitting parts. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces and prevents loosening and leakage from shock and vibration. Typical applications include sealing cup plugs and securing cylindrical metal assemblies, e.g. engine block cup and core plugs, spark plug tubes, vent tubes and fittings, and axle gears and flanges.
